AGM

Northwood's AGM was held at the club on Friday 26th January.

After several years of sterling effort as First Eleven Skipper, Simon Noach has stood down as captain. Simon has lead by example during his captaincy being one of the most consitent players in Division 2 with both bat and ball. Hopefully without the additional duties of captain, he will score even more prolifically and take more wickets than in previous seasons.

In charge now is David Goodhew who missed out on much of last season trying to take a diving full length catch at long off, breaking his collar bone in the process, requiring an operation to correct. He will be assisted by Danny Rodgers who has stepped up to vice captain. Danny will no doubt bring his experience and thorough knowledge of the game to the team, and we are already looking forward to an entertaining and exciting season.

The Second team continue to be led by Nick Nicholson with banker Keith Watson adding his experience to the mix, whilst "The Young Ones" evergreen Steve Dickson and Paul Reeve continue at the helm for the threes.

Nets have started on Wednesday evenings, 9pm indoors at Merchant Taylors School. Anyone interested in coming along to join us at any senior level is welcome.

Raj Latchman

Raj Latchman

It is my sad duty to inform those of you who don't already know the tragic news that Raj Latchman died in the early hours of yesterday morning.

As is his normal custom in the Cricket season, Raj was sleeping overnight in the pavilion to avoid the return journey to Leytonstone between Saturday and Sunday fixtures. It will be a couple of days before we know the results of the post mortem, but all appearances indicate that he died peacefully in his sleep. He spoke on the phone to his father, Penroy, just before going to bed.

Funeral arrangements for Raj on Monday, September 21st, are as follows:

 - Service at Holy Trinity Church, Northwood, at 2.15 pm.

 - Burial at Northwood Cemetry (family only) at 3 pm.

 - Following the service everyone is invited to Northwood Cricket Club for refreshments.

"Reggie" was a great character and one of the nicest people you could ever meet. He was widely loved and will be very, very sorely missed.

End of Season Awards

2009 End of Season Awards – The Winners - And Losers

As in the last couple of years, I have asked the team captains to provide details of stand out and terrible performances throughout the year. This could be a one-off or for the whole season. I have a nomination from each team for each category and there is one winner

So we shall begin with;

Best Batting

1          There have been a number of good batting performances this year. Danny’s hundred vs Potters Bar (and being the highest run scorer, with the best average), Rosco’s 77 vs Northchurch, my 63 vs Welwyn Garden City off 40-odd balls. But the nomination for this comes from a Sunday game against BBC Mishits, when Nick Nick scored his first hundred for the club in very quick time, and I understand averages over 120 for the 1st XI this year

2          Stu Reeve v Botany Bay. The first 70 of his 97 was deemed, by a number of knowledgeable observers, to be some of the best seen at NCC. That he fell short was, of course, of huge disappointment to Stu and he had convinced himself (having earlier been run out for 99 (thanks to Brockers) in the season) that he would never reach 3 figures for Northwood. That was put to rest 2 weeks later when he fittingly scored his first 100 for NCC at the Field of Dreams v Northchurch.

3          Macpie has batted superbly this year, he has scored 740 runs with 2 hundreds and an average of over 50. The main reason that the 3s were in promotion contention. I also understand that he came very close to beating the league record for Div 10.

However, the winner is Bryan “Chuck” Ward, when he batted impeccably and completely to instruction scoring an invaluable 38 that was vital in a low scoring game that ensured the win against Weston

Worst Batting

1          While the 1s haven’t necessarily had the best performances this year with the bat, looking through the records, I was amazed with the number of ducks there have been this year. A total of 35. And there are some big offenders for this. Nuss, Reggie and James have all got 5 each, while Gobbo has 4. So the nomination here is a 4 way 1st XI duck walk

2          The Three Amigos v Old Camdenians. With only 5 or 6 overs to go and Northwood desperate to get up to 200 the lower middle order put on quite some show. In such a short space of time they managed to incorporate the Classical 'What not to do when running between the wickets'...usually only seen by schoolboys or drunken Keystone Cops. 'Yes' 'No' 'Wait' 'Shit'...... 'What are you doing at the same end as me?'.... 'Dive for the crease and turn your whites brown' and the timeless 'Shake hands in the middle, where's the ball?'....all of them more than once. Such was the entertainment that not even the rain and eventual result could fully dampen the spirits.

The Three Amigos are : Ram Nandiraju, Mandar Karnik and Shiva Nammikanti

3          Dicko informs me that there is no contest for this one. 1st ball of the match was a long hop outside off stump, he tried to pull it to leg, missed it completely and nearly fell over in the process. 2nd ball, a long hop outside off stump, again he exercised the pull to leg, missed it completely and nearly kicked the wicket down. 3rd ball, a straight one. Change of tactics this time and unusually he tried to hit it with a straight bat, missed it completely and was bowled –vs Weston well batted Robert Fells

And the winner is a First XI duck walk. Sadly James Lewis has left the building so Gobbo Raj and Nusskey will have to do the walk.

Best Bowling

1          The stand out team bowling performance for this would be the Northchurch game. Having amassed 244 for 8, the biggest worry for a win being prevented was the weather. With a tropical thunder storm over Northwood Hills, quick wickets were essential (not helped by Reggie taking 2 wickets of no-balls). However Reggie with 5 and Roscoe with 4 plus a run out sealed a sweet 30 ponts for Northwood. However the nomination here really must go to just one person. With 39 league wickets and over 100 for the club this season, Raj Latchman

2          Ram Nandiraju v Old Haberdashers. A Herculean effort!! He bowled unchanged throughout the innings. Caught and bowled their danger man, Akash Christien, who was looking likely to set us a huge target to chase and ended up with well deserved figures of 27-5-83-7.

3          The stand out bowler for the 3s has been Paul Reeve. 54 league wickets including an 8fer, a 7fer, 2 6fers and a 5fer. However the best bowling nomination for the 3s is as much for the bowling as it is for the way he talked the entire bar through his spell afterwards. Playing Shenley village, Northwood got 182-6. With Shenly closing in on the target, the ball was passed to John “Rumpers” Clifford. He proceeded to get 5 for 14 on 3.4 overs. Apparantly the second ball cut back so much that it “would have bowled Ponting”. The only way to celebrate this was to pick up the stump and prance around the pitch with it. Anyone who wants a further description, please chat to Rumpole.

And the winner is Ram for his 7 for 83
Worst Bowling

1          Gobbo’s none for 46 in a tight must win game at Broxbourne did crop up in discussions over this. However, the nomination goes to someone else. You might consider it harsh to award this to someone with 15 wickets at under 17. However, one expects ones premier strike bowler and captain not to turn up for the beginning of the season fat, unfit and injured! So for not bowling enough this year, the nomination goes to Simon Noach

2          You might think that having bowled a single 2 over spell it would be difficult to get this nomination. Of course it helps if that 2 over spell last for 19 balls and goes for so many runs! So for that fantastic spell the nomination goes to Ronnie Patel

3                    A little harsh this on Reevo given the stats I mention earlier. But it was clearly a season of peaks and troughs. Because as well as all the wickets he took, he also went 5 weekends and 61 overs without a single wicket

The winner is Ronnie Patel.

Best Fielding

1          I was amazed by Noachy’s suggestion for the nomination for this; Steve Lewis, swooping in like a pregnant gazelle, for a direct hit, albeit from 5 yards, to win the game at Broxbourne. However, when he talked me through the incident in the bar after the game he looked too much like a camp darts player to get any award here. So the nomination goes to Sam “The Colonel” for being the best 1st fielder all season but also for the best catch I have ever seen at the field of dreams. Jumping backwards and grabbing the ball so high up he needed a step ladder to reach it. He managed to hold on as he hit the ground only to find out that it was a Reggie no-ball!

2          As I said earlier, the Captains suggested many of these nominations so it comes as some surprise that Nick has nominated himself for a gravity-defying two handed catch in the covers to dismiss their opener in the must win game against Sandridge last week and setting the tone for an excellent team fielding performance and a win that was vital of survival

3          The catch of the season in the 3s was undoubtedly Shameen against Little Berkhamsted Sahibs. Their opener struck the ball firmly to mid wicket at waist height. Shameen took off horizontally and at full stretch, using all of his 6’3” frame plucked the ball from mid-air. A truly wonderful catch. Such a shame he has dropped so many easy ones

For this category the winner is Shameen!

Worst Fielding

1          Unfortunately I have to nominate myself for this. In Murtagh’s stag game of cricket on the May Bank Holiday, I was fielding at long-off in front of the tea hut. Needing one wicket to win the game a catch went up towards me. I wasn’t sure whether to go for it or not, but the fact there was a crowd behind me, including my girlfriend made me decide that this was a chance of glory. So I dived forward, dropped it and smashed my shoulder into the ground. The resulting broken collar bone meant that it was the end of my season!

2          While special mention must go to Iyazz Shariff vs Old Camdenians Picture the scene...Stuey Reeve runs in, ball gets clipped of the batsman's legs down to fine leg. Only there is no fielder there....captain looks on confused. Suddenly, Iyazz emerges from behind the sidescreen, hurriedly adjusting himself saying that there is something in the bushes. There was.....the sodding ball he was meant to be stopping before he went for a piss!!!! However the nomination goes to The Blind Waiter v Datchworth. They only needed 1 to win...the ball is skied upwards to backward point...the fielder circles underneath it...he is a cricketer of fine repute.....a consolation wicket we all feel...it must be taken......it falls to the floor without a hand touching....said floor is then pummelled as if it is a drug dealing informant....the fielder? PC Andrew 'Rouge' Powell-Williams.

3          The nomination for this is Mobo vs Bovingdon. Their opener gently chipped the ball to Mobo standing at mid off. Mobo took 2 steps forward and the rest of the 3s anticipated celebrating the catch with him. However, Mobo had other plans. He stopped and looked around, one can only presume that he was hoping someone else would step forward and take the catch, naturally no-one did and the ball landed firmly on his right boot

The Winner? WPC Rouge Powell Williams.

End of League Season Party

Ladies and Gentleman,

Unfortunately the end of the league season is nearly upon us, but on the plus side we can have the mother of all knees-ups to celebrate our successes/bemoan our failures/laugh at our inadequacies for the season that has just been

We could also be celebrating the survival of the 2s in Div 5 and the promotion of the 3s to Div 9 – fingers crossed and good luck to those lads

This is always a very enjoyable evening, with food, plenty of drinks and the all important awards;

Best and Worst Batting, Bowling and Fielding.
The Captains’ race.
1s v 2s v 3s Boat Race.

We really have it all!!!

It would be great to see all players there, to see in the end of the season. Also, for all of you who have supported us on the field throughout the season and off the pitch with some fantastic teas, we’d love to say thanks for your support by sharing a drink or two

The BBQ will be at around 8, with awards afterwards, but please feel free to come up at any time to watch the 1st XI play Kings Langley.

Northwood CC Golf day 11th June 2009

Northwood held their inaugural NCC Summer Golf Day at Batchworth Park., courtesy of some excellent organisation by Tom Brockton

Bryan "Chuck Norris" Ward triumphed in spectacular style at the inaugural NCC Summer golf day at Batchworth Park.  Chuck's 4 under par 68 was good enough for 45 points and victory by 4 points from guest Gareth Jones.  Craig Nichols and Tom Brockton were joint 3rd with 40 points after rounds of 76 and 78 respectively.  Dicko has now ordered Chuck to repeat this feat with the bat and score 68 on Saturday when the 3rd XI travel to Weston.

A special thanks to our chefs for the day Steve Wareham and Kevin Burn for laying on a magnificent spread at NCC in the evening and to Tom Brockton for organising such an enjoyable day, and managing not to win his own competition!

Cricket Match - 4th June 2009

Northwood entertained the Cricket's Club of London at Ducks Hil Road. "Winning" the toss, Northwood elected to bat and the lowest score was Wattie on 42 who was caught atheletically by the guy at gully who played alongside Barry Miller... Ranj, Brockers and Nuss all got half centuries and McPie would also have done so had Ash (loaned to the oppo for the day) not stopped his shot from going for 6 (still dropped him though!).

CCOL were slightly understrength as some tight bowling from Raj Nilesh and John Clifford meant that runs were extremely hard to get. Some interesting dismissals (or not!) followed and eventually CCOL were dismissed for 151.

It was an excellent day, with the opposition stating how much they enjoyed the game. An excellent lunch was provided by Margaret Nicholson and another curry by Nilesh was particularly enjoyed by the opposition. They are keen to return and savour the delights of Northwood Cricket Club. (Minus you know who..!)

Practice

Every Wednesday at 7.15 (for a 7.30 start) at Northwood Cricket Club, Nick "Jonte" Nicholson will be leading us in a few fielding drills to hone our fielding skills. We all know we are in need of such practice so please come down for about an hour of serious practice plus a few laughs. It is also an excellent excuse to increase club funds through a few beers afterwards.
